The UNOSDP hopes that sports can improve the lives of girls in three areas. Empowering girls and boosting their self-esteem, giving them equal opportunities to education and employment, and developing female leaders.
Empowering girls to allow them to make life decisions, a skill they were previously incapable of doing. However to allow girls to achieve this strength, they have a sense of “self-appraisal and of self-worth”. Playing sports provides women with these necessary attributes.
In many societies, girls are excluded from community life and are not offered the same opportunities boys receive. Through sports programs, communities can become more welcoming to girls, which would result in unfair and unequal “traditional, cultural and gender norms” to be reversed.
On the field, girls are offered many opportunities to gain valuable leadership skills. Their improved leadership skills, along with political and social reforms towards girls not receiving leadership chance, can foster more scenarios for female leadership and achievements.
