The United Nations Office on Sports for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) is a recent initiative that aims to use sports as a medium to solve problems including “poverty, hunger, child mortality and disease”. Along with eradicating issues, this strategy hopes to promote “education, maternal health, gender equality, environmental sustainability and global partnerships.” The office works together with the United Nations to find ways sport programs can effectively contribute to achieving “development and peace” in areas around the world. Below, we will look at the UNOSDP’s history, its goals, why it choose sports, and how sports can contribute to each of its different targets.
