Background: Facilitating the social change of youth. Umthombo plays an active role in reintegrating youth living on the streets back into society. The organization achieves this goal with sports activities such as soccer. It believes that by allowing children to participate in after school activities, it shall dissuade them from doing drugs, and joining gangs.
How it began: Spouses Tom and Bulelwa Hewitt founded Umthombo after helping many youth living on the streets. The organization began in 1998 as Durban Street Team, with only 4 members working all day on the streets assisting children. In 2004, the organization renamed itself to Umthombo Street Children.
