Description: Using tennis as a tool for mentorship and community building. The Kings County Tennis League located in Brooklyn, New York, uses tennis to teach skills its players can use off the court. The league targets children from low-income families, who have either had minimal or no experience with tennis. Its mixing of children’s excitement about tennis with positive mentoring fosters not only improved tennis skills, but also effective communication, fair play, and the benefits of commitment.

How it achieves its mission:

It positively mentors its athletes by:

  • Creating a competitive environment centered on positive communication;
  • Incorporating life skills training into each class;
  • Giving out take home literature to students;
  • Inviting role models to speak; and
  • Providing healthy eating alternatives during class.

Its build the community by:

  • Partnering with local non-profits;
  • Raising funds for capital and beautification projects;
  • Working with local designers and artists to build the program; and
  • Giving local high school students and residents the opportunity to volunteer
