Description: Educate. Inspire. Motivate. Grassroot Soccer aims to use soccer to turn the tide against HIV. To achieve its goal, Grassroot Soccer continuously improves on its innovative HIV prevention and life-skills curriculum, share its program and concept effectively, and utilizes the popularity of soccer to increase its impact. The decision to mix soccer and HIV is the simplicity of being able to play soccer (only need a ball) and the potential damage inflicted by AIDS.

How it began: It all started with witnessing the devastation of AIDS mixed with the popularity of soccer. Tommy Clark, the founder of Grassroot Soccer, decided that he must combat AIDS. Along with a group of friends with similar experiences, Tommy and his co-founders (Methembe Ndlovu, Ethan Zohn and Kirk Friedrich) created Grassroot Soccer to use soccer as a theme to prevent AIDS.

Its Success:

  • The percentage of students who could list three people they could talk to about HIV increased from 33% to 72%
  • The percentage of students who knew where to go for help for HIV related problems increased from 47% to 76%
  • The percentage of students who said they would feel comfortable providing emotional support for an HIV positive classmate increased from 52% to 73%
  • The percentage of students who believe condoms were effective increased from 49% to 71%
