Description: Helping girls in Harlem through figure skating. Figure Skating in Harlem is the first nonprofit organization of its kind. It combines the power of education with the discipline of figure skating to transform young lives and help underserved girls achieve academic success, physical health and emotional well-being.

Its Mission: The mission of Figure Skating in Harlem is to transform young lives and help underserved girls grow in confidence, leadership, and academic achievement.

Its Vision: The vision of Figure Skating In Harlem is to empower every young girl, regardless of her socioeconomic background, with the foundational academic, social and leadership skills to achieve her dreams.

Its Impact: Figure Skating In Harlem serves more than 200 girls annually. Since 1997, it has provided over 1000 at-risk inner city girls with the tools they need to avoid high-risk behaviors and make positive choices for their future. Now in its 16th season, it will transform its educational services as well as continue to expand its fitness opportunities to have an even greater impact on the girls it serves.

2012 Student Survey Results:

  • 98% felt safe and supported
  • 99% were more helpful to others
  • 97% felt a sense of accomplishment
  • 93% felt they had better teamwork skills
  • 94% achieved better academics

2012 Parents Survey Results:

  • 92% felt that their daughter had stronger academics
  • 94% felt that their daughter had improved concentration
  • 98% felt that their daughter had improved leadership skills
  • 100% felt that their daughter had improved her physical condition
  • 100% felt that their daughter had increased her pride
